ETHNEM™ - 1.5GM
Meropenem Sulbactam for Injection
PACKING SIZE / TYPE
20ML WITH CARTON
Summary
ETHNEM™ - 1.5GM is a broad-spectrum antibiotic containing Meropenem and Sulbactam, used for treating severe bacterial infections. Meropenem, a carbapenem antibiotic, works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, while Sulbactam enhances its efficacy by inhibiting beta-lactamase enzymes that bacteria use to resist antibiotics. This combination is particularly effective against multi-drug-resistant (MDR) bacteria and is commonly used in hospitals for life-threatening infections.
Side Effects
-
While generally well-tolerated, ETHNEM™ - 1.5GM may cause some side effects, including:
- Common Side Effects
- Nausea, vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Headache
- Rash
- Injection site reactions (pain, redness, swelling)
- Serious Side Effects (Rare but Critical)
- Seizures (more common in patients with renal impairment)
- Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis, angioedema)
- Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea
- Liver enzyme elevation (Hepatitis, Jaundice)
- Blood disorders (Neutropenia, Thrombocytopenia)
-
If severe side effects occur, medical attention is required immediately.
Usage
- Administered intravenously (IV) in hospitals under medical supervision.
- Dosage depends on the severity of the infection, kidney function, and patient weight.
- Typically given every 8 hours as an IV infusion over 15-30 minutes.
- Must be prepared and administered by a healthcare professional.
Concerns
-
Key Considerations
- Renal Impairment: Dosage adjustment required.
- Neurotoxicity: Can cause seizures in patients with brain disorders.
- Antibiotic Resistance: Use only for confirmed bacterial infections to prevent resistance development.
- Clostridium difficile Risk: Can disrupt gut microbiota, leading to severe diarrhea.
- Superinfection Risk: Prolonged use may cause fungal or secondary bacterial infections.
When not to use?
ETHNEM™ - 1.5GM is contraindicated in:
- Patients with a known allergy to Meropenem, Sulbactam, or other beta-lactam antibiotics (Penicillins, Cephalosporins, Carbapenems).
- Individuals with a history of severe hypersensitivity reactions (Anaphylaxis, Steven-Johnson Syndrome).
- Severe renal failure without proper dose adjustment.
- Neonates and infants without medical consultation.

Dosage
Standard Adult Dose
- Mild to moderate infections: 1.5g IV every 8 hours
- Severe infections (e.g., Meningitis, Pneumonia, Septicemia): 1.5-3g IV every 8 hours
- Renal Impairment: Dose adjustment based on creatinine clearance (CrCl)
- Children: Dose based on weight (as per doctor’s prescription)
Interactions
-
ETHNEM™ - 1.5GM may interact with:
- Valproic Acid & Divalproex: Can reduce valproic acid levels, increasing seizure risk.
- Probenecid: Delays Meropenem elimination, increasing toxicity risk.
- Other Beta-Lactam Antibiotics: Avoid combining with other carbapenems to prevent toxicity.
- Aminoglycosides (Gentamicin, Amikacin): Increased risk of nephrotoxicity.
- Blood Thinners (Warfarin): Can enhance anticoagulant effects, increasing bleeding risk.
